Comments: Hi!

I am currently researching the relationship between mental health and substance abuse in adolescents. I have been on so many different sites and reading so many different articles that my head is spinning! I thought I’d take a quick break from it and send you a note -- hopefully it will be a productive “break” for both of us! :)

Anyway, I thought you’d want to know that you’ve got a dead link to a very important resource on your site. SAMHSA’s National Mental Health Information Center is no longer an active page: http://www.mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/. What a loss!! It was a fabulous resource. I didn’t find one that offered as much as that page did, but I thought I’d suggest a couple of sites just in case you want to replace the dead link - http://www.nimh.nih.gov/index.shtml and http://www.mentalhealth.gov/. Check them out to see if either (or both) would be a suitable replacement. By the way, the dead link is on this page: http://idexter.com/understanding/depression/samhsa.html

And I do have one last recommendation, and that is to review two more resources and consider adding them to your site as well. As an Independent Research Consultant, I am always looking for, and sharing, the best of the best when it comes to mental health, addiction and treatment options. I truly feel these are great tools that should be made available to your visitors. Check them out and please feel free to add either or both if you agree!

I am interested in two color photographs of the Dorney Park Steel Force Roller Coaster by David W. Creig which appear on your site. Can you put me in touch with David to request high resolution photos and permission to use them in a college physics book?

Comments: Hi Dexter,
I happened to come across your site when I searched for the "Hang On Baby, Friday's Coming" poster, which I had mounted on my bedroom closet door back when I was a teenager! After viewing the photo tour of your house, the first thing that popped into my mind was that it was a darn good thing a fire never broke out, because that would have been a REAL firetrap! What did the outside of the house look like? I'm surprised you didn't include exterior views (from the street, backyard, etc.). BTW, I'm also into roller coasters and have been an "off and on" ACE member! Anyway, do you still have that "Hang On Baby, Friday's Coming" poster??? If you do and no longer want it, I'm interested in it! Take care.

Comments: My husband's mother had the same problem. OCD-hoarding. Is your father paranoid? She was. Her husband (elderly) had to move out when she died. He found it impossible to "clean up" the mess, due to her "screwing" him in her will. Now my husband is taking leave of absense to get house ready to sell so his father can get his equity. My husband must travel to another city and take a hotel room and eat out in order to "clean" that house. We suspect the last time the house was vacuumed (or cleaned in any way) was in 1969. The lady hoarded grocery sacks, twist ties, toasters (brand new -still in boxes) and loose change. So far my husband has found ~200,000 pennies in the kitchen....

Comments: wow, the house was kind of sad. my parents keep a house full of clutter as well. my mother is disabled now, so she cant do anything about it. when i was a child (before she was sick) it wasn't so bad. the clutter in thier house was so bad that when they moved out of my childhood home into a new home, i had to stay behind and sort through everything, box by box, and walk my father through the process of throwing things out....which led to many arguments and put quite a strain on our relationship for a while. after i went away to cllege, i realized i would never be able to change him, and i stopped. now i will try and help when i can but i never try to press the issue.

anyway, my point is....i think its really kind of awful to make an entire website about your father's house. i'm pretty appalled. how embarrasing. i would NEVER do that to my parents. do you think your father is proud of the clutter that he lives with? why not do something useful, like help him sort through things, or you and your father could put some money together to hire a de-cluttering agency (yes, they do exist) and take care of this problem. it might be hard for your father to let things go, but he will probably sigh abig sigh of relief when he is able to live in a home where he can actually have some company. instead of embarrassing him, why not help the man out?

I can say that the house did look like that, maybe a bit better when his mom was alive. He did have a hard childhood and kids used to tease him alot, and me for always sticking up for him. Comments: Jeepers. Please. When you clean out that house, document what you find and your process - what was thrown out, etc. I'm dying to know what treasures are in there, what secret horrors lie underneath. This perhaps sounds horrid, given that the "cleansing" will probably happy after your dad has moved on to bigger "collections" in the sky -- but you could always attempt it while he's still alive. Errr. Better not. The shock would probably kill him. A further request for a House 2 page update every couple of years.

I took the Tour, and I feel much, much better. I laughed, and felt compassion and empathy. My Mother's house (Dad died 1996) is similar to your Dad's house. Only not so much so. I'd say maybe 75% of the condition of your house.

Although I've read about OCD, and viewed a TV magazine episode or two about it, your Tour makes it real.

I am not alone. Thank you.

Comments: Your middle initial must stand for Wrichard, because you're certainly a Dick. I can't comment on the rest of your site, because after seeing the first two pages of pictures of your Father's den -- in the context of your gee-look-how-bad-my-Father's-house-is-and-tell-me-how-good-I-am blather -- I was so disgusted by you, Dick, that I chose to look for an E-mail address to let you know what I believe. So I only saw the 'beginning' of the house ...

Wrichard, you are a vulgar little maggot. Worth less than a bag of filth, I'll bet you couldn't pour piss out of a boot with instructions on the heel. You are a chancre. A sore that won't go away. Rest assured that those you believe to be your friends would rather kiss a lawyer than be seen with you.

You're a putrescent mass. Walking, talking vomit. Were you simply a spineless little worm deserving only the profoundest contempt, your esteem would be greater than it is now. You are a jerk, a cad, and a weasel. If your life is like the web-page I read, your life is a monument to stupidity. You are stench and revulsion corporeal.

You are a bleating foal, a curdled staggering mutant dwarf smeared richly with the effluvia and offal accompanying your seeming birth into this world. An insensate, blinking calf, you are meaningful to nobody ... especially that Father who daily assures himself that your genesis was prevented by gravity ensuring the fruit of his loins leaked down your Mother's thighs. Like the Cuckoo or Brown-Headed Cowbird, the puke-drooling, giggling beasts who sired you deposited you in a home, to further their line. After seeing your regard for your step-father, they no doubt killed themselves in recognition of what they had done.

I will never get over the embarrassment of appearing to belong to the same species as you. You are a monster, an ogre, a malformity. I barf at the very thought of you. You have all the appeal of a paper cut. Lepers would avoid the infectious filth that is you. You are vile, worthless, less than nothing. You are a weed, a fungus, the dregs of this earth.

Did I mention you probably stink, Wrichard?

What a dick.

You are a dick, of the highest order

Comments: Hey there. Ya know,..I ended up entering "The House" as my commentary subject because I couldn't choose multiple topics (because I skimmed over several out of further interest AFTER taking the house tour..) But let me just say,.."Wow..." first,.. and then "thank you", for giving me that little tour. It was VERY interesting, in a "train wreck" sort of way.. I went through that, wondering all the way if you had some shocked friend with you as you were going through the place yourself taking those pictures, or whether you were doing that alone. Me,..I'm not sure I could have done it alone.. If you did,..you're a braver man than I,..and I don't mean that in a sarcastic way, either,..I'm talking about the kind of feelings touched upon by your "Haunted" poem, which,..I have to admit,..really stirred up some complex feeling for me.. I never had the type of influences that such an environment can create as I grew up, but,..after having lost both my folks in the last eight years,..there's a part of me that still gets "that feeling" when I try to walk back along those paths of my youth. Not quite melancholy, perhaps,..but,..hmnn,..a sort of primal "You can never (and perhaps SHOULD never) go home" kinda feeling. By the end of the house tour,..I realized that, in a way,..the "shocked friend" I had wondered about going with you on that trip back into your past,..had become me,..in that you had shared a part of your life on a personal level, which,..oddly enough, was less disturbing,..and more touching.. Which is why I felt the desire to thank you for it. I recently went back to the home I and my parents had lived in when I was a child back in Arkansas, in a remote area of the Ozarks.. It was still there, long since abandoned and falling back to nature.. Talk about haunted.. I had to fight off dueling urges to cry or to run away due to some vague fear (and I had my nephew there to comfort me!). Anyway,..I really enjoyed your poems, and your other interests, I was enthralled by the house-journey you took me on, and I hope you are finding some relief from your arthritis woes.

Take care...and thanks again..

Sincerely,..

Scottie ^_^

Comments: Hi David,

Just wanted to comiserate with you. I grew up in a house similiar to yours. Well, maybe not quite as bad but it was very messy and dirty. The house always stank because our mother wouldn't potty train our pets or discipline them properly (because she didn't want to be "mean" to them). When I got older, I worked with the animals and would get them straightened out but my Mom would eventually undo the work by forgetting to let them out, etc. I remember not having any friends over because I was too embaressed.

It wasn't until my sister and I were diagnosed as adults with ADHD and ADD without hyperactivity (respectively), that we became suspiscious that our Mother shared the same disorder. Check out info on ADD without Hyperactivity... it is the kissing cousin of OCD.

So anyway, hang in there.

-Eleanor

Comments: Hey, I just wanted to say "nice house". Also I figured out what the board and ladder setup are for in the second floor hallway. It appears that the ceiling was repaired and the board was put in place to hold up the piece of drywall while the joint compound was drying. Of course the board was not long enough for this purpose so it was fastened to the ladder in order to achieve the proper height.

Comments: I work in the home service industry and am invited into peoples homes on a daily basis.
Last year I went to a home that was very simular to your fathers.
This fellow, ( he told me his story ) had not gotten rid of anything in over 40 years!
The windows to the house were either covered or obscured and the lights were inadequate and were absorbed by all of the stuff. As he let me thru the house and my eyes adjusted to the light, I was amazed at what I saw.
Like your fathers, every square inch of the house had something from floor to ceiling even the full basement under the house! As I walked I noticed boxes of simular size and various age stacked from floor to ceiling lining every wall in the house. I wondered what this was.
At one point I followed the homeowner to his office for him to use the phone. As I stood there for the 5 or so minutes waiting, I looked around at what I could see. Across the room sitting on a fireplace mantle was a baseball card display containing three very old baseball cards. I later inquired as to what there were and he showed me that they were cards of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantel!! And all were rookie cards. I was looking at $100,000.00 worth of baseball history sitting in this place!! Shocked I asked him how he got them and he said that he had been collecting cards since he was 7 years old and he was now 80 years old. He said that he had two of the Babe Ruth Cards!
He then told me that he had over 1.2 million baseball cards sitting that house! That was what was in the boxes lining the walls of the house. I stood there in shock with my mouth hanging open. I inquired as to why he did not have the most valuable ones in a safe deposit box, he said he did for years, but he got to the point that he did not trust banks anymore and wanted to keep them close by. I left the house in just absolute disbelief at what I had just seen. I remember thinking that he had well over 1 million dollars in paper alone and hoping that the house never catches fire or that would be a very sad loss.

Thank you so much for showing such a wonderful thing! I am an at- home-mom and I live with my husband and his two parents that moved in two years ago because they went broke. We also have four children. They are all hoarders. I have pictures that would rival yours. Whenever I try to throw anything out I get hollared at by seven people. It is complete insanity. They won't let me throw out a bottle, a shopping bag, 5 week old food in the fridge, used paper plates, nothing. Now I know what it is called - hoarding. I used to think that I must be a slob because I can't keep up with the mess, however I went away to take care of my mom for a month and was amazed at how immaculate my hotel room remained the whole time. I have spent the past 15 years trying to put a dent in the day to day clutter that grows faster than I can keep up. My husband thinks I need to start "contributing" by getting a job even though he earns six figures. I struggle with depression big time. I wish I could send you some pictures of where I live. Thank you so much for sharing this. You have lifted my depression if only for an hour or two.

The original name for Dorney Park's Laser for the first year was Colossus. The had to change it when another prak was discovered to already have the name trademarked. I worked for Dorney Park as a Teenager from 1983-1991.

Eep! This is almost as bad as my grandaunt's house. At least your Dad's is just mess - hers has dog shit, urine, dead mice & rotten food in the mix, and is hideously dark. Wiring seems in similar state. My mother & I helped her clear out last year - moving out 4 tonnes of rubbish in 4 days (and that was just the ordinary household rubbish from downstairs - we never even got started on the upstairs, or the hoarded things.

Will come back to peruse the rest of your site later, but have to go offline now.

Hope your Dad finds the will to sort it someday.

Hi Dexter,

I'd like to get your permission to use the top photo of "Return of the Jedi" on your site. Mike Coate and I are going to post a major article and list of films shown in 70mm in NY. Being that "Jedi" played at the Astor Plaza in 70mm, we'd like to include your photo. We will give you credit.

We also will have some "Star Wars Trilogy" coverage once the site goes up this week.

Thank you.

Best,
Bill Kallay

Wonderful, wonderful website. You are so talented, as well as being an articulate writer. I came here after still not understanding the "put your chances in a box" quotation, after reading the lyrics on the link you provided Wants2Fly. I expect the lyric is like much poetry -- the way the words are put together either speaks to one's soul or it doesn't If it has to be explained, the meaning is lost, in the same way that a joke isn't funny if someone has to explain it to you. But thanks for trying. Maybe someday the light bulb will turn on and I'll get it.

I love your website because it is well-organized, easy to navigate, has an interesting collection of stuff on it. And esthetically pleasing. Nice job.

I first found you on the mental health forum where I was deeply impressed by your knowledge. I, too, suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and depression with anxiety. I have been in therapy for the depression for 7 months and can say I am honestly better than I was. I am on an experimental drug for the RH that has put me in remission for almost 2 years - an unheard of amount of time for me - usually a new drug lasts only 4-6 months. Good luck with all your troubles - I can say, quite honestly, I know at least a little of what you are going through. Your site is awesome, by the way! I will mark it as a favorite and come back again. Mars

Hi, this is the first time I've looked at your website. Well I have to say "The House" is very crowded! Does your dad still live there in all that mess? It does though look like it is a good-quality house, from the size/amount of the rooms and the bannisters etc. And I thought my room was messy!
The article you wrote on depression is very good.

Whoa! I thought Dean's grandparent's place was awsome! It took 8 months and several of the biggest dumpsters available to empty the place -- even after all 7 kids and the grandkids had taken what they wanted. Libby

My grandparents' house only had a couple of rooms that looked like that. Ok, the basement was like that, too. Yikes!! Dean

The black curve graphic is split in several places.

Haven't tried is at home on the Mac browsers.

I really Liked the poem "Haunted" It fits my profile very well. At an earlier date I visited photos of the "House" found it to be very informative. The depression and Mental Illness also was great. All well composed and well created.
